About Doug (@thedouglane)

Thanks for coming here from my Twitter profile. If you aren’t already following me, let me tell you a little about who I am, what I do, and what I like to write about in 140-character increments.

Who I Am

I’m a 37 year-old living in Aurora, Colorado with my wife and two small kids.

(Clarification: my kids are small because they are young.)

What I Do

When I was eight years old, I had a blast programming in AppleSoft. Not much has changed. I work in the specialized but growing field of business intelligence, primarily with Microsoft SQL Server and the BI tools that come with it: Integration Services, Analysis Services, and Reporting Services. Put a little simpler: I build things that answer questions.

Outside of my work, I’m active in the SQL Server community. I’m a board member for the Denver SQL Server User Group, and I give presentations around the country both on SQL Server and professional development.

What I Tweet About

Since most of the people I follow are also SQL Server junkies, a lot of my tweets are interactions with them. I’ll occasionally vent about a bad experience — I’m only human, after all — but I try to keep my outlook generally positive. I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s, so you’ll see a moderate dose of dated pop culture references (case in point). I may retweet a fart joke, or (gasp!) a four-letter word. The one rule I have is not to make someone feel worse about themselves. Aside from that, ANYTHING GOES.

Still Not Sure About Following Me?

(The joy of seeing my miniature face sprinkled throughout your Twitter stream isn’t enough? Fine, then.)

Two practical reasons to follow me:

  1. On average, I tweet about ten times a day, so I won’t be cluttering your stream.
  2. I follow the #ssrshelp hashtag — a tag people can attach to questions they have about Reporting Services. I try to answer questions posted there whenever I can.

Lastly, here are three blog posts you may find helpful:

  • If you’re afraid to be yourself for fear of not fitting in, read this.
  • If you have trouble with estimating time and deadlines at work, read this.
  • If you want to know what the PASS Summit is like, check this out.

Thanks for visiting my about page. I hope to hear from you soon!
